Experience
As an associate at Rana Law, Emily uses her background in government and community relations, negotiation, human rights, and advocacy to advise and assist First Nations on a variety of issues, in particular, Treaty rights and litigation, the adverse impact of developments on Treaty rights, and specific claims. After completing her articles at a large governmental organization, Emily participated in the Canadian Bar Association’s International Development Program, working for a legal NGO in Durban, South Africa, where she assisted with constitutional human rights litigation mainly in the areas of access to education, governmental services, and housing. She also assisted in developing a court monitoring program and educational aids for child witnesses. Following her return to Canada, Emily spent several years honing her advocacy and negotiation skills in a busy civil litigation practice.
Since 2005, Emily has accrued extensive litigation and advocacy experience, and has appeared as Municipal Crown Prosecutor in Alberta Provincial Court and as legal counsel at all levels of court in Alberta and at numerous administrative tribunals in both Alberta and British Columbia.
